Varieties of Anemones
Different types of anemone flowers include perennial, non-tuberous plants that grow from fibrous roots and tuberous anemone varieties that are planted in the fall, often alongside tulips, daffodils, or other spring-blooming bulbs.
Non-Tuberous Anemones
Meadow anemone – An American native that produces small, white-center flowers in groups of two and three. Meadow anemone blooms profusely in spring and early summer. Mature height is 12 to 24 inches (30.5 to 61 cm.). Japanese (hybrid) anemone – This graceful plant displays dark green, fuzzy leaves and single or semi-double, cup-shaped blooms in shades of pink, white, or rose, depending on the variety. Mature height is 2 to 4 feet (0.5 to 1 m.). Wood anemone – This European native produces attractive, deeply lobed leaves and small, white (occasionally pale pink or blue), star-shaped blooms in springtime. The mature height is about 12 inches (30.5 cm.). Snowdrop anemone – Another European native, this one producing white, yellow-centered blooms measuring 1 ½ to 3 inches (4 to 7.5 cm.) across. The sweet-smelling blooms may be double or larger, depending on the variety. Mature height is 12 to 18 inches (30.5 to 45.5 cm.). Blue windflower – Native to northern California and the Pacific Northwest, the blue windflower is a low-growing plant with small, white, springtime blooms (occasionally pink or blue). Grapeleaf anemone – This anemone variety produces grape-like foliage. Silvery-pink flowers decorate the plant in late summer and early autumn. The mature height of the tall plant is about 3 ½ feet (1 m.).
Tuberous Anemone Varieties
Grecian windflower – This tuberous anemone displays a thick mat of fuzzy leaves. Grecian windflower is available in shades of sky blue, pink, white, or reddish-purple, depending on the variety.
